Our guest Julie Morris is an LA-based natural food chef, author of the popular ‘Superfood’ cookbook series, and a spokesperson and executive chef for Navitas Naturals.
We talk to her today about her journey from college student to superfood entrepreneur, and Julie also shares with us some great tips on how to start incorporating superfoods into our diets.
Practical Solutions for Incorporating Superfoods into Your Life
You don’t need to clean out your entire pantry and adopt radically new nutrition strategies to start eating superfoods. Most can actually be incorporated seamlessly into your current diet. Start small by choosing one superfood a week to incorporate into your diet. Chia seeds are a good place to start. They are neutral in flavor and texture, and can be added to anything.
Remember, when it comes to improving your diet, there is no action step that is too small. In the world of nutrition, everything counts.
A lot of people have concerns over the cost of superfoods. However, they tend to last a very long time (e.g. one bag of maca will last you a month). And when you look at how much foods cost per nutrient, you start to see where superfoods are in fact a savings.
Julie’s Top Superfoods
- Leafy greens
- Hemp seeds
- Chia seeds
- Spirulina Powder
- All types of berries
- Maca powder
Julie’s Mint Chip Smoothie
Julie’s favorite go-to smoothie combines great ingredients and great taste. Her delicious Mint Chip Smoothie is nutritionally well balanced and contains:
- Bananas
- Frozen spinach*
- Vanilla protein powder
- Fresh mint
- Cocoa nibs
- Rice milk (or any other non-dairy milk)
- coconut water
*Use frozen greens instead of fresh greens for smoothies. They are much more condensed than their fresh counterparts and the freezing process mutes their taste.
Maintaining High Energy and Productivity
In addition to eating superfoods, Julie believes self-love is a key component of maintaining high energy. She emphasizes that there is a positive side to being slightly selfish and you need to make sure that your body is getting what it needs.
In terms of her morning routine, she starts each day as early as possible, gets things going with a high intensity workout, and whips up a superfood smoothie before getting to work.
When it comes to entering her flow state and being productive, nothing is more important to Julie than starting with a clean working environment.
